We are dead last in red zone defense. OUr opponents (and let's be frank, they aren't a whos who of juggernaut programs) have NOT FAILED ONCE to score in the red zone! They SCORE 100% of the time! I'm ashamed of that. Haven't felt shame since John Blake days.
We're going to get to see if there's any improvement or progress without Mike Stoops.
(Can't beat that dead horse any longer, he's gone! Though some probably will.)
After the first game, I was certain I saw improvement on the defense. Alas, I was mistaken.
My concern now is the players attitude and mindset. They got bullied by Texass. Pushed around. Punked!
They've become a joke nationally. Quite frankly from where I sit, they're a bunch of slack-jawed girly men.
They can't tackle. They over pursue. They can't beat a one on one block. They still look confused on the field.
They "whiff" on tackles when they've got their opponent player dead to right.
They look timid. They look scared. Their demeanor is one of uncertainty, unsure of themselves.
Worst of all, they don't seem to reflect a "TEAM" attitude. When an individual makes a play, the individual celebrates, but alone. Don't see the group celebrating another's success. There's a definite lack of unity.
Now, understand I'm venting. None of my comments indicate anything but my own opinions of a program I dearly love & respect like nothing else in my life. It hurts to give voice to my observations, but it is cathartic.
One other thing, this story or rumor I've heard and read about where a player walked OUt on his team! Clear out the tunnel to the State Fair. Had teammates go get him. You're kidding me right?
Don't know if it's true, but if it is, that boy rides the bench for at least a game in my mind. You don't leave your men on a contested field. "Don't want to be here, don't want you here!"
It's an honor to play at OKLAHOMA, kid!
SOONERS don't quit. They don't walk away from a fight. Even one they're losing.
Think I'm calling you out? DAMN STRAIGHT!
OKLAHOMA has to go forward with the players they have. Maybe, they can become a defensive TEAM, and improve. Have to say, I have my doubts. But I do still believe they can.
The optimism I've had for this season has melted into concern and real trepidation.
If I'm one of the opponents on OKLAHOMA's remaining schedule, I'm excited about an opportunity to torch them.
One last thing, I'm concerned about.
Does Lincoln Riley have control of his team?
Bob Stoops had iron-hand control of his squads.
The players better know & understand who's in charge. It ain't them, it's the Head Coach.
Or it better be!
This could spiral into a circling the drain scenario that threatens the entire program.
Can the ship be righted?
I think so!
Regardless of the statements in this post, I'm a pollyana, blind loyalist, chinaman.
Always have been, always will be!
I love the OKLAHOMA SOONERS FOOTBALL TEAM!
OU, OU, OU!!!
